Uskmouth Sustainable Energy Park

SAE is the owner, developer and operator of the Uskmouth Sustainable Energy Park. The site has been the home to electricity generation for over 50 years but the way we generate and use electricity is changing and SAE and the Uskmouth site is proud to be leading that change. SAE is transforming Uskmouth into one of the largest Battery Energy Storage Systems sites in the UK to help support the energy transition to Net Zero while ensuring vital energy security and managing the increase of renewables.

The Uskmouth site

The Uskmouth site is capable of supporting circa 3.5GWh of Battery Storage projects.

The site currently has one 460MWh Battery Storage project in construction, which SAE sold the rights to in 2023. This project has plans to expand to 700MWh.

SAE are planning on building owning and operating the remainder of projects on the site as an Independent Power Producer. This includes three further projects named after the River Usk in Welsh Afon Wysg - “AW1”, “AW2” and “AW3”.

SAE has planning permission for its AW1 project, this 240MWh Battery Storage project is being developed to be online in 2026 with potential for further expansion to 480MWh later in the decade.

The next AW2 project at 500MWh is being developed with a grid connection agreement of 2029 with the potential to expand up to 1GWh.

The largest AW3 project at 1.4GWh is due in the 2030s.

We have a National Grid substation infrastructure located on the site, reducing lead time for grid connection of our projects.

We have railway facilities to bring material for construction and electrical infrastructure onto site.

As a brownfield industrial energy site, local planning authorities are supportive of this type of development at Uskmouth.

We have the expertise of developing, building and operating at the site for over 50 years.

As the cost of batteries continues to reduce, SAE has developed the projects to efficiently expand the duration of the batteries from 2 hours to 4 hours , significantly increasing the opportunity.

Battery Storage projects at this scale are essential for UK Government to achieve Net Zero targets as they balance intermittent renewable generation such as wind and solar with demand.
